Hell Hath No Fury

An excerpt from the Washington Post -

Hell hath no fury like an entitled white man denied
By Jonathan Capehart

But the histrionics of Graham and Kavanaugh showed once again how hell hath no fury like an entitled white man denied. No humility. No contrition. No humanity beyond his narrow interests.

Strong words broadly brushed, I know. But I’m done tiptoeing around powerful men like Kavanaugh and Graham when their bruised, tender feelings will have an impact on my life and my country.

Rice Offers Free Tuition

An excerpt from CNN -

Rice University to offer free tuition to low-income and middle-income undergraduate students
By Gisela Crespo

Rice University will award scholarships that will cover the cost of tuition to students from low-income and middle-income families starting next fall, the school announced Tuesday.

Under an initiative called The Rice Investment, US students seeking an undergraduate degree with family incomes under $130,000 will not pay tuition. Those with family incomes below $65,000 will also receive grant aid to cover school fees and room and board.
Students with family incomes between $130,000 and $200,000 will be eligible to receive scholarships that will cover at least half of their tuition. The plan will impact continuing students who are eligible based on need.

Remember Him?

Attention Mr. Grassley, Mr. McConnell, Mr. Hatch, Mr. Corker, Mr. Graham, Mr. Cornyn and Mr. 46 minus 1: this is Mr. Merrick Garland. Remember him. You held his Supreme Court nomination open for 293 days without a single hearing. During those 293 days, no one came forward with a shred of evidence about anything that would disqualify him. You just didn’t schedule a hearing or vote for purely political reasons. There is now a credible attempted rape allegation against your Court nominee. For a lifetime appointment. Whose nomination has been open only for 71 days. And your plan is to rush a vote on his nomination without an FBI investigation into a sexual assault he may have committed? Because 46 minus 1 says about the FBI, “this is not their thing.” The “I” in FBI stands for “investigation.” Even I (and everyone that works at the White House) had two FBI investigations into my background as the White House photographer, though I had never committed a crime. So you don’t want the FBI to investigate someone for the Supreme Court about a credible attempted rape allegation? Please explain.

How Pedialyte got Pedialit
Inside Pedialyte’s journey from toddler flu remedy to hangover fix.
By Kaitlyn Tiffany

In May 2015, Pedialyte announced that it would target the hangover market — or rather, a subset of the adult market made up of people who engage in what the brand refers to as “occasional alcohol consumption.” The market was already there — Abbott said adult sales of Pedialyte were up 57 percent since 2012, accounting for a full third of total sales; the company was just deciding to go after it officially.

Abbott’s senior brand manager Eric Ryan tells me the decision to woo adults was simple: “The beauty of the product is that the benefits haven’t changed — Pedialyte is still a medical-grade hydration solution backed by advanced science. We don’t endorse heavy drinking or claim to cure hangovers, but our users find confidence in having a trusted rehydration solution that works.”

People had been tweeting about using Pedialyte as a hangover remedy since at least 2009. (Although back then, you could also find lots of people talking about rehydrating kittens and puppies. It was a different time online.) Some of these people were famous, including Carson Daly, Diplo, and a slew of college football players.

Getting Rich Dumpster Diving

An excerpt from Wired -

THE PRO DUMPSTER DIVER WHO'S MAKING THOUSANDS OFF AMERICA'S BIGGEST RETAILERS

BY DAY, MATT Malone is a security specialist for Slait Consulting. By night, he earns even bigger money as a dumpster diver.

He’s not diving in just any dumpster. By targeting electronics stores, like Office Depot or Best Buy, he makes away with like-new vacuums, computers, surveillance systems—you name it. If he pursued this secondary career full-time, Malone estimates he’d make more than $250,000 a year.

Although he doesn’t object to the term “dumpster diving,” Malone prefers the term “for-profit archaeologist.” One man’s trash is this man’s treasure—because we’re conditioned to see it that way. “We can only do what we do here because we live in a society where most people have been conditioned to look past what’s right in front of them,” says Malone.

Incredible!

Stanford Children's Health - Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford
about 3 weeks ago
A chance encounter at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford has led to a heart-warming reunion between nurse and patient. Brandon, one of our pediatric residents, was born 28 years ago in our NICU--then just 29 weeks old. Vilma was his primary care nurse. Fast forward nearly 30 years, and Vilma recognized Brandon’s name while he was rounding at our hospital. What a memory! Here’s a special look at them both then and now. #WaybackWednesday
