Meet Canada's First Black Female Interventional Cardiologist

An excerpt from Face2FaceAfrica -

Meet the Haitian woman who became Canada’s first Black female interventional cardiologist

BY Dollita Okine

                                         Meet Alexandra Bastiany, Canada’s first Black female interventional cardiologist.
                                       Photos: Alexandra Bastiany
Alexandra Bastiany, Canada’s first Black woman interventional cardiologist, was raised in Montreal by a Haitian mother who pursued a career in nursing and a father who worked as a chemist. Thus, Bastiany’s ambition to become a doctor has been present since she was a young child.

She told Heart and Stroke, “Both my parents had defied the odds by attending college and university and becoming young professionals in a foreign country. I was determined to follow in their footsteps and achieve my dreams, despite how the world perceived me, and independently of what society expected from me. I was determined to rise above the statistics and the stereotypes. I must also say, I love a challenge.”

But even as a teenager, she was inspired by the intricacies of “such a simple organ” called the heart and understood that practicing cardiology was what she wanted to do.

“During my first year in medical school, I fell in love with the heart, but I did not think cardiology was for me until I learned about interventional cardiology (this is a practice that works on the arteries in the heart to remove blockages using non-invasive procedures, through the wrists or groin),” she said.

South Carolina Builds First Monument to African American

An excerpt from the Associated Press -

South Carolina to build first monument to an African American. Meet Robert Smalls

Robert Smalls made an audacious escape from enslavement to become a pilot and a South Carolina statesman.

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina is preparing to put up its first individual statue for an African American on its Statehouse lawn, honoring a man who put on Confederate clothes in order to steal a slaveholder’s ship and sail his family and a dozen others to freedom during the Civil War.

But Robert Smalls isn’t just being honored for his audacious escape. He spent a decade in the U.S. House, helped rewrite South Carolina’s constitution to allow Black men equality after the Civil War and then put up a valiant but doomed fight when racists returned to power and eliminated nearly all of the gains Smalls fought for.

Rep. Jermaine Johnson can’t wait to bring his children to the Statehouse to finally see someone who is Black like them being honored.

Larry Graham on Bass

An excerpt from BassPlayer -

“I wasn’t interested in learning the ‘correct’ style of playing bass. I was going back to guitar”: Larry Graham explains how his unorthodox six-string style invented slap bass

How the father of slap bass drove the world’s grooviest band

By Nick Wells

Bassists like Larry Graham come around maybe once a century. Widely credited as the man who invented thumping and plucking, or slap bass if you prefer, he switched to bass from guitar and famously began to thump the strings while playing in his mother's band as a teenager.

Joining Sly & The Family Stone in 1967, Graham made his new style the defining sound of funk. No group before or since – with the possible exception of Prince – had such success in crossing funk grooves and pop melodies the way Sly and his band did on tracks such as Stand! and Dance to the Music.

“Dance to the Music stands out as one of my favorite basslines,” Graham told Bass Player. “Bass players weren't using effects up until that point, and that opened the door. Everyday People is also unique because I'm just thumpin' one note with the same rhythm for the whole song. I'd never heard that before.”

Highest Divorce Rate in America in These States

An excerpt from The Boot -

The Divorce Rate in America is Highest in These Five States

By Evan Paul

With the divorce rate hovering near 43 percent in America, wedding bliss can be just that, or your marriage can end in divorce.

That doesn't stop people from taking the risk, however — nearly 90 percent of people get married by the age of 50.

America has the highest divorce rate in the world, and it's especially bad in some states.

Divorce Rate in America Is Highest in These 5 States

If you're looking to get married and stay that way, you might not want to reside in one of these five states. These states have the highest divorce rate in the country:

5. Oklahoma
4. West Virginia
3. Kentucky
2. Wyoming
1. Arkansas

The divorce in Arkansas is more than 60 percent higher than the rest of the country as a whole! Researches say that Arkansas has a higher number of marriages, so that could be part of why there's higher number of divorces.

Snoop Dogg shares what made him change his tune on 'derogatory' lyrics about women

Here's to being willing to learn and evolve.

By Annie Reneau

Snoop Dogg has become a beloved figure among all ages.

Few people in the public eye have had as dramatic a redemption arc as 90s gansta rapper, Martha Stewart best bud and Olympics ambassador Snoop Dogg. The 52-year-old has become a beloved figure for multiple generations who enjoy his chill positivity and endearing, get-along-with-everyone persona.

No one who came of age in the 90s would ever have imagined their parents or grandparents becoming Snoop Dogg fans, yet here we are.

The perpetually stoned G-funk star came onto the music scene as a bad boy of West Coast hip-hop in the early 90s, with a criminal rap sheet that included felony drug possession and sale and first-degree murder charges (for which he was acquitted). His music reflected his gangster lifestyle, with references to drugs and alcohol, deadly gang rivalries and derogatory slang terms for women.

But to his credit, a couple of key interactions with other musicians led Snoop to change his tune when it comes to putting misogynistic lyrics into his songs.

Dionne Warwick told Snoop and his friends to say it to her face

In 2023, Snoop shared in the CNN film Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over that singing legend Dionne Warwick had invited him and some other 90s rappers to her house. They were to arrive no later than 7:00 a.m., and they found themselves so intimidated, they were in her driveway at 6:52 a.m.

"We were kind of, like, scared and shook up,” Snoop said. “We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever. Thirty-some years in the game, in the big home with a lot of money and success.”

Warwick said she respected their right to express themselves but was tired of the misogynistic lyrics in their songs. She pulled a power move, demanding that they call her a "b__ch" to her face.

"“You guys are all going to grow up,” she told them. “You’re going have families. You’re going to have children. You’re going to have little girls, and one day that little girl is going to look at you and say, ‘Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?’ What are you going to say?”

Snoop said that he and his fellow rappers were "the most gangsta as you could be" at that time and believed they couldn't be checked. He admitted, however, that Warwick "out-gangstered" them that day.

Lifesaving Item You Should Probably Pack On Vacation

From Buzzfeed -

The Lifesaving Items That Doctors Always Pack On Vacation

Medical experts recommend taking face masks, hand sanitizer, tweezers, tape, and more whenever you travel.

by Tessa Flores, HuffPost Staff

According to Dr. Sterling N. Ransone Jr., president of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a full-time family physician in Deltaville, Virginia, having a really good grasp on your specific medical conditions or allergies and the medications needed to treat them is absolutely essential to vacationing safely. (The American Academy of Family Physicians does not endorse any products or services.)

“It’s important to include a one- to two-day day supply of medications taken for chronic conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Things happen. You never know when your luggage may be lost or stolen. A small supply in your first aid kit will relieve worry until your doctor’s office can arrange for a refill near you,” Ransone told us.

He said that this list can include things like epipens, inhalers, glucose kits or aids used to treat coronary issues.

Outside of the realm of medicine, Ransone also said that he packs copies of identifications, passports and health insurance cards for each person traveling. “You never know when you may need to seek care due to accident or illness. It’s also good to have extra copies on hand in case you fall victim to theft,” he said.

You can keep unpacking Ransone’s luggage in the list below, in addition to seeing the travel recommendations of a couple other physicians, too.

1. An economy pack of hand sanitizers

Amazon

For the same reason listed above, Ransone will also always travel with a germ-busting rotation of liquid. These are extremely high-rated and trusted options for germ protection in addition to being perfectly packaged for travel.

Get a pack of eight from Amazon for $14.99.

2. A two-pack of pocket-sized strips of duct tape

Amazon

According to Ransone, there's not much that he can't fix with duct tape, whether it be used to close wounds or secure splints. That being said, who wants to tote around a huge roll of duct tape around in their suitcase? These flat, pocket-sized mini rolls have five yards' worth of tape each and solve that problem instantly.

Ransone also recommends what he calls "buddy tape," which are cushioned  bandages that can be useful for stabilizing jammed or sprained toes and fingers.

Get a two-pack from Amazon for $7.99 (available in seven colors).

5. A 50-pack of DEET-infused towelettes for protection on the go

Amazon

"I hate getting itchy bug bites when traveling. Insect repellent wipes really help. Plus, preventing bites can help you avoid certain infectious illnesses, like Zika and Lyme disease," Ransone said.

These towelettes each contain 30% DEET, one of the most reliable ingredients used to repel Lyme-carrying ticks, and can be rubbed onto exposed patches of skin to provide up to seven hours of protection. The water-based formula is low-odor, non-greasy and non-staining.

"Talk with your family physician if there are vaccines you should get before traveling to parts of the world where these infections are common," Ransone added.

Get a 50-pack from Amazon for $41.50.

Why the Steelers Don't Have Cheerleaders

An excerpt from TotalProSports -

Here’s Why The Pittsburgh Steelers Don’t Have Cheerleaders

By Darrelle Lincoln

Pittsburgh Steelers fans (Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images)

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not have cheerleaders.

It is crazy to think about since the Pittsburgh Steelerettes were the first cheerleading squad in the National Football League, serving as the cheerleaders for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1960s.

They are one of only six NFL teams without cheerleaders, along with the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants.

Speaking of the Packers, when the two teams met in Super Bowl XLV, neither franchise had cheerleaders, as Green Bay did away with their cheerleaders in 1988 after market research indicated fans did not really care.

The Steelers’ cheerleading pioneers were part of the organization from 1961 until 1968.

In the 1960s, the team’s lack of cheerleaders ended after the girls wished to wear outfits that were more “modern” and “daring.”

According to Wikipedia, the owner wasn’t feeling it, so he decided to fire them instead.

This is Why Mediocre Leaders Are Everywhere

An excerpt from TIME -

The Plague of Mediocre Leadership

By Barry Conchie and Sarah Dalton

Have you ever been taught by a teacher who couldn’t teach? We have, and it wasn’t the result of them lacking motivation and desire. Neither was it them missing a teacher-training course module on Friday afternoon one semester. These teachers, although well-intended, should be no where near children and education. They might have always wanted to become a teacher, but they lack the natural talent to be on—even an average one.

It’s the same for managers and leaders. Just like bad teachers, we’ve all met too many examples of these during our careers—bullies, narcissists, micromanagers, and those who graduated cum laude in crass insensitivity. Insecurity lies at the heart of their incompetence, and they see their position as an exercise in authority and control, insisting and directing rather than delegating and trusting. They inflict their mediocrity on everyone in their care. We have both experienced leaders and managers who, in different ways, nearly succeeded in destroying our sense of self-worth and caused us to question our whole reason for being. With managers and leaders, the vast majority are unfit for their roles.

~~~~~
In our research, we have seen a disproportionate weighting of leaders in a narrow set of attributes and traits, such as action orientation (a predisposition to act before fully thinking things through) and relationship building (connecting to people because of a mutual liking of each other). As strong as these attributes are, they seem to come at the expense of other important traits and dispositions, such as strategic thinking. These two findings combine to produce outcomes that lead to ineffective execution and project missteps.
An example of this occurs when leaders, because of the relationships they build, find it hard to performance manage team members by holding them to account for sub-standard work. Rather than terminate these employees, weaker leaders never address the performance issues and poor behavior and unacceptable performance is tolerated.
Why, then, do so many mediocre managers and leaders get promoted to the highest positions where they fail in large numbers?
Let’s frame our answer by making one thing clear: Exceptional leadership is rare. Mediocre and poor leadership is the norm.
(Bold is mine. This is an excellent article that is spot on. I hope that you have the opportunity to read it in its entirety. - Faye)
